Captions on a Chromebook

Open cuecaps.com/studio in Chrome, add the video from your Files app and click Find words. Transcription and rendering happen in the browser, so it works on a Chromebook with nothing to install, and you download an MP4 with the captions burned in or an SRT file.

Steps

  1. Open cuecaps.com/studio in Chrome.
  2. Click Choose file and pick the video in the Files app. Videos in Google Drive appear there too.
  3. Click Find words. On-device transcription runs on the Chromebook itself; cloud transcription is faster on older models.
  4. Read the captions, click any word to fix it, and pick a style.
  5. Export the MP4 or an SRT file. It lands in your Downloads folder.

Live Caption is for watching

ChromeOS has Live Caption under Settings, then Accessibility. It captions whatever audio plays on your Chromebook, for you, as it plays. It doesn't add captions to the video file, so the people you send the video to won't see them. For that, the captions have to be in the video or in a subtitle file next to it.

On older or school Chromebooks

  • On-device transcription uses the processor, so a slower Chromebook takes longer. Cloud transcription does the listening on a server instead: a free account includes 10 minutes a month.
  • Long videos take longer to render. Keep the tab open until the export finishes.
  • School-managed Chromebooks sometimes block downloads or new sites. If the studio won't open, ask whoever manages the devices.

Questions

Do I need to install anything?

No. Cuecaps runs in Chrome; there's no extension or Android app to add.

Can I use a video from Google Drive?

Yes. The Files app shows your Drive, so you pick the video like any other file.

Is it free?

Yes. Captioning and styling are free without an account, and a free account downloads the MP4 with a small mark or the SRT file without one.
