Three kinds of Reels captions
- Auto-generated captions: made by Instagram after you post. Each viewer turns them on or off, so they are easy to miss.
- The Captions sticker: transcribes your speech into text you place on the reel while editing. Once posted, it is part of the video.
- Captions added before upload, in an editor such as Cuecaps: burned into the MP4 and styled the way you chose.
When people say their Reels captions are not showing, it is nearly always the first kind. The text under a reel, the post caption, is a separate problem covered in the questions below.
Fix it in Instagram
- To see captions on reels, look for Captions in Instagram's settings under Accessibility and turn them on.
- For your own reel, open the advanced settings before sharing and check that auto-generated captions aren't switched off.
- If the Captions sticker finds no captions, your language or region may not be supported yet, or the voice is too quiet under the music.
- Update Instagram. If the sticker keeps failing, log out and back in, or reinstall the app, which keeps your account data.
Captions that show on every reel
- Drop your reel into the Cuecaps studio before you upload it.
- Click Find words with Language set to the language you speak, then correct any word the model got wrong.
- Choose a style and keep the captions clear of the bottom of the frame, where Instagram shows your name and the post text.
- Export Video (MP4) and upload it to Instagram as a reel.
Captions in the picture don't depend on anyone's settings, so a viewer scrolling with the sound off reads them straight away. The same 9:16 file works on TikTok and Shorts too.
There is nothing to sign up for until you export, and a free export adds a small Made with cuecaps.com mark to the video.
Some previews use a frame from Sprite Fright by Blender Studio, CC BY 4.0, cropped.
Questions
Why can't I see captions on Instagram Reels?
Check that captions are on in Instagram's accessibility settings and that the app is up to date. Some reels have none, because auto captions aren't made for every language or every video.
How do I make captions show automatically on my reels?
You can't make Instagram's captions show for viewers who have them off. Burned-in captions and the Captions sticker are visible to everyone.
Why did my reel post without its caption text?
That is the text under the reel, not subtitles. Instagram can block the post text while still posting the video, for example when it breaks the guidelines. Edit the post and check the text.
Can I use the same captioned video on TikTok and Shorts?
Yes. One 9:16 MP4 works on all three; check the placement in the free safe zone checker, because each app puts its buttons somewhere slightly different.
